Approximately 64.5 percent of American adults are overweight or obese. One-third of American children and adolescents, the group that the American Obesity Association calls "the most inactive generation in history," are overweight. Obesity is the second leading cause of unnecessary deaths in America. As a result of this health crisis, the need to fill positions in the healthcare industry is already becoming particularly acute.
The trend towards obesity, often called the disease of wealthy countries, is unfortunately not slowing. At least 300,000 deaths in the U.S. and approximately $100 million in healthcare costs can be attributed to obesity. Needless to say, the healthcare industry is bracing itself for a difficult future. As the rates of obesity continue climbing, America's aging Baby Boomer population will further strain the healthcare industry.
