Dental Assisting in The City of Destiny: Tacoma, WA

Known as the City of Destiny, Tacoma is not only Washington's third largest city. It is also a major gateway to the Pacific Rim and home to such stunning natural wonders as Mount Rainier National Park and Puget Sound.

What's more, with its easy access to the city of Seattle and a number of fine local colleges to choose from, Tacoma, Washington is also a great place to begin your career as a dental assistant.

While Tacoma maintains a hometown feel, the city offers all of the services and attractions of a larger metropolitan area. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job prospects for dental assistants are excellent. The Bureau reports that employment for dental assistants is expected to grow by 27 percent or more through 2014. What Dental Assistants Do?
Unlike dental hygienists, who perform cleanings and other services for patients, dental assistants work chairside with dentists handing them their instruments and keeping patient's mouths clear. Dental assistants are also responsible for obtaining dental records, sterilizing instruments and equipment, and preparing trays. Some dental assistants also prep materials for impressions, take x-rays, and apply anesthetics to gums, while others have either record-keeping responsibilities or laboratory duties making casts of teeth, cleaning removable appliances and making temporary crowns.
