Surgical technology training covers an interesting mix of medical theory and practice, and leads to a rewarding career. You've probably seen a surgical technologist in action in the movies or in your favorite soap opera, but may have never realized it!
The surgical technologist is the person in the background handing instruments to the surgeon or taking the patient's vital signs. A surgical technologist also helps prepare the operating room for operations, by laying out the surgical instruments and checking that equipment is working properly. Surgical technologists prepare patients for surgery and operate equipment such as suction machines. About three-quarters of surgical technologists work in hospitals, usually in operating and delivery rooms.
Becoming a Surgical Technologist
A surgical technologist has an important job with a high level of responsibility-- which means that formal surgical technology training is a must. Students can aim for a certificate, diploma or associate's degree in surgical technology. Programs can last between nine months and two years.
Your surgical technology program will include classroom subjects such as anatomy and medical terminology. You'll also undergo practical surgical technology training under supervision, from learning how to sterilize instruments to caring for patients during surgery.
