If you're looking to pursue a career in the culinary arts industry, Philadelphia might be the place for you. The City of Brotherly Love boasts Philly cheese steaks (arguably the best in the world!), cream cheese, yummy soft pretzels, and some of the best restaurants and culinary arts schools on the East Coast.
Culinary Arts Schools
A variety of independent cooking schools, professional culinary institutes, colleges, and universities in Philadelphia offer premier culinary arts programs. It'll take you anywhere from two to four years to earn you culinary arts degree, depending on the type of school you attend. Culinary arts programs are designed to develop your cooking skills as well as enhance your knowledge on subjects including:
- Nutrition
- Gourmet cuisine
- Portion control
- Menu planning
Culinary arts programs also focus on preparing students with hands-on training in kitchens. Students learn, from experienced chefs, important culinary skills like:
- Good knife techniques
- Safe food-handling procedures
- Proper use and care of kitchen equipment
Aside from academics, you'll have the opportunity to intern or work at one of Philadelphia's top restaurants like the French-inspired Le Bec-Fin or the Striped Bass, a luxury seafood experience by famous restaurateur Stephen Starr. You'll also enjoy the city's cultural and historic spots such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the famous symbol of freedom, the Liberty Bell.
As you can see, by graduating from a Philadelphia culinary arts program you'll gain a competitive advantage as a chef. Plus, you'll enjoy life in one of the U.S.'s most historically rich cities, where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were drafted, and where Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin once lived.
