For every catastrophe, there is usually a ray of sunlight. The devastation caused by hurricane Katrina is no different.
We hear tales of unparalleled bravery, and of professionals going beyond the call of duty to get aid to the people who need it most. The Red Cross is just one such organization involved in the program to get New Orleans back on its feet. Once the first phase of finding and helping survivors nears completion, there is the unsavory task of cleanup.
Information is Power
You may be surprised to learn that a solid medical information system and an effective information retrieval system can be among the most powerful tools used in the aid operation. Effective information retrieval systems can reduce the risk of wasting resources from delivering aid to an area or person twice. It also means that regions are unlikely to be missed altogether.
Information Systems Careers
Systems engineering can be a very flexible and valuable skill set to have. You may learn about all sorts of techniques that can be used and tailored to create information retrieval systems, a medical information system being just one variety. An online Master of Science (or M.S.) in information systems could be the start of your dream career. Studying online is a great way to learn, since you can still work, studying in the evenings or on weekends. Online M.S. in information systems programs are usually more cost-effective than campus-based methods of learning, due to lower overheads. You can usually gain access to online help, and webcasts can help you feel involved with the group learning.
If you would like to help those in need by providing better medical information systems and information retrieval systems, consider getting an online M.S. in Information Systems.
