Iowa's capital city grew from a military fort constructed at the confluence of the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers. From that humble beginning, it grew into a city of 200,000 and, today, is an excellent place to go to school.
If you go to school in Des Moines, you'll probably spend a bit of time walking in skywalks way above the city streets. There are over 2.4 miles of skywalks connecting buildings in the downtown areas. This unique feature was designed to allow people to work and shop downtown even in the blustery winds of winter.
The Adventureland Amusement Park of Des Moines is the talk of the Midwest, with over 100 rides and one of the fastest roller coasters around. The park has a campground attached so you don't have to go to a high-priced hotel if you want to spend more than one day exploring the park.
