DeLand, FL
DeLand, in Volusia County, Florida, is located in the eastern central part of the state, an easy 25 minutes drive from Daytona Beach and 40 minutes from Orlando.
Offering an old-fashioned downtown full of gift shops and restaurants, the city bills itself as the Athens of the South. With a population of just 16,500, DeLand has a comforting, small-town feel to it, but with a great many outdoor activities for both residents and students.
Water lovers will appreciate the fact that DeLand is located between the banks of the St. Johns River and the surf of the Atlantic Ocean. In addition, there are plenty of beaches nearby, including Daytona Beach and charming New Smyrna Beach, home to gorgeous white-sand beaches.
Several parks nearby offer plenty of outdoor excitement, including camping, swimming, picnicking, scuba diving, and canoeing. DeLeon Springs State Park allows visitors to experience the history of the early settlers to the region, and paddle a canoe through the wilderness. |
