Do you love animals? Imagine how satisfying it would be to work with them every day. That's what veterinary technicians do: they help veterinarians to care for household pets, wildlife and livestock. What's more, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that jobs for veterinary technicians are expected to increase, as more pet owners seek state-of-the-art care for their animals.
And one of the best places to study for a career in veterinary technology is in the heart of California's Central Valley, in Stockton, California. This agribusiness-focused area has plenty of animals for you to work on.
What's Veterinary Technology?
In order to assure timely, top-quality care for animals, veterinarians use veterinary technicians in much the same way doctors work with nurses. Vet techs conduct a variety of routine clinical and laboratory duties. You might assist in collecting and recording medical histories, taking and developing x-rays and providing nursing care. While most veterinary technicians care for small animals such as household pets, others specialize in caring for larger animals such as those found in zoos and on farms.
Why Study in Stockton?
With its easy access to the Sacramento River Delta, coastal California, the stunning Sierra Nevada Mountains, and the San Francisco Bay Area, it's no wonder that Stockton, California, is now the state's 13th largest city. However, unlike many California cities, Stockton remains affordable. Housing prices in this ethnically diverse, dynamic community are typically one-third the cost of those in the Bay Area, making it an affordable place to earn a two- or four-year degree in veterinary technology at one of Stockton's many local colleges.
If you're looking for a satisfying career helping both animals and their owners, consider earning your degree in veterinary technology.
