Looking for a rewarding career in the rapidly expanding healthcare industry? Want to earn a college degree--and enjoy an amazing quality of life while you study? Consider earning your Associate of Sciences degree in respiratory therapy at one of San Diego's many local colleges.
Here's a look at what respiratory therapists do, and what you'll need to know about getting an AS in respiratory therapy.
What Do Respiratory Therapists Do?
Respiratory therapists evaluate, treat and care for patients who have breathing problems. Under the guidance of a physician, they offer temporary relief to patients suffering from asthma and emphysema, and provide emergency care to heart attack, stroke, shock and drowning victims. Therapists treat patients using oxygen and oxygen mixtures, physiotherapy and aerosol medications.
Why Get An AS in Respiratory Therapy?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median income for those holding an AS in respiratory therapy is roughly $43,000 per year. And while no degree can guarantee you a job or a particular salary, opportunities for respiratory therapists are expected to increase by as much as 26 percent through 2014 and beyond. The reason? As the population ages, more people are likely to suffer from respiratory ailments such as chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, and heart disease.
Getting Your Degree in San Diego
With its close proximity to Mexico, Southern California's wine country and numerous beaches, it's not surprising that San Diego is the sixth most populous city in the United States. San Diego is also home to a number of attractions, including Sea World and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. San Diego also offers outstanding shopping, several performing arts venues and a number of museums, ensuring you'll always plenty to do when you're done hitting the books.
