Birmingham, AL
Situated at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains, Birmingham is Alabama's largest city with a population of over one million. In the heart of the southeastern United States, the city retains the distinctive flavor of the south in both its culture and cuisine.
Birmingham is home to a wide variety of educational, cultural, and sporting facilities. Museums include the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Museum of Art (the largest in the Southeast), Vintage Motor Sports Museum and Motor Sports Park, and the McWane Center, which focuses on natural sciences and has its own IMAX theater.
Nearby is Birmingham Zoo, which houses over 700 wild animals and includes an alligator swamp. Only five minutes from the city center is Ruffner Mountain, a thousand acres of nature trails and special conservation programs. Just outside the city is Oak Mountain State Park, which covers almost 10,000 acres and offers hiking, mountain biking, boating, fishing, swimming, and a lakeside beach.
